"Catching the Wind”

Acts 2:1-21

Pastor Bayes, preaching

As one travels north on Interstate 39, one can see an array of wind farms. The

wind is a powerful energy source. Now wind farms are being developed to

capture the power of the jet air stream. Can the church catch the wind—the rush

of a powerful wind from God?

Health Tips from the Parish Nurse

Protect your brain with a book. Turning a few pages

keeps your mind sharp for life. It’ s not science fiction: Cozying up with a

good book shields your brain from decline. Researchers theorize that

bookworms develop a brainpower reservoir that is tapped when

disease or aging threatens their gray matter.

TOOLS OF HOPE

AB Women's Ministries will bring their

annual Tools of Hope information to our

congregation May 18 & 25 with a display in

Fellowship Hall. The right tool in the hands

of people in need is the mission of this

Church World Service program. It allows

communities far and near to meet immediate

needs and gain self-sufficiency. Ordinary things -- things that

we often take for granted like blankets. . education…clean

water …garden tools… seeds -- can make a world of

difference for people devastated by tragedy, as well as those

working to build better life for their families and their

communities.

Consider this --

Hoe, shovel, and rake $ 15

4 CWU Blankets $ 20

20 5-gallon water jugs $ 30

Small water tank &

emergency pump $ 50

INTERNATIONAL MINISTRIES PROVIDES DISASTER RELIEF

TO MYANMAR FOR CYCLONE RELIEF

First Baptist Church will provide assistance to the victims who were devastated by

the cyclone in Myanmar. We will receive the One Great Hour of Sharing Offering

during the month of June. The offering is part of an ecumenical offering taken by

numerous denominations. The collective effort raises about $20 million annually

for development aid, disaster relief and refugee resettlement assistance in

more than 70 countries around the world.

American Baptist International Ministries will provide an initial $5,000 disaster

relief grant to help with relief and recovery in Myanmar, where Cyclone Nargis

struck on Saturday. The grant, funded by One Great Hour of Sharing, was

requested by Rev. Stan Murray, area director for Southeast Asia. The initial funds

will be used by partners to provide immediate relief of clean drinking water,

non-perishable food, blankets and medical kits to those who are victims of

the devastating storm.

According to media reports, Nargis struck on May 3, in a low-lying delta region of

this Southeast Asian country, with winds of up to 120 miles per hour. News

account give estimates of at least 10,000 deaths, with another 3,000 people

missing and 100,000 people displaced. In a country with a population of nearly

55.4 million, the cyclone struck a region in the southwestern tip of the country,

home to 24 million people.

" Myanmar has tremendous historical and current importance to American

Baptists," said Murray. "Formerly known as Burma, our mission agency began with

the work of the Judsons in that country. Today, we are still partners with the

Myanmar Baptist Convention, and work with many ethnic groups from Burma who

are refugees seeking to make a new life in the United States," Murray said. He

added that International Ministries has not been able to make contact with its

partners in Myanmar, but hopes to do so very soon and get better assessments of

the immediate and long-term needs in the country for relief and recovery.

You can provide disaster relief for Myanmar by designating your gift to the One

Great Hour of Sharing. You can make your designation in the following way:

First Baptist Church

Designate: “OGHS-Myanmar Cyclone.”
