Mission Board objectives: Objectives

First Baptist Church has always promoted a strong emphasis on missions-- local, national, and foreign -- as we seek to hear God's call to serve in the midst of a hurting world.  This service is demonstrated in financial support for projects as well as in the hours of member donated time spent doing God's work and making His world a better place to live.

Our very own Don Baker; President Jimmy Carter & Rosalind Carter; Miller and Linda Fuller, founders of Habitat for Humanity; and Peoria workers -- in green shirts

The days of June 6 -13, Peoria was very much represented in LaGrange, Georgia, (in the green shirts) as 45 people worked on this house and the one across the street. You can see in the sign the letters JCWP which stand for JIMMY CARTER WORK PROJECT. President Carter and his wife, Rosalind, visited the site this day and worked with the volunteer builders.

Our Neighborhood School

Hines_1.JPG (207023 bytes)

Purpose:

The purpose of the program is to create a partnership between First Baptist Church and Hines Elementary School (K-4 ) to enhance the educational program of the school. The program seeks to use the expertise of church volunteers to improve the educational opportunities for the children of the school.

Goals:

The program seeks to:

· Foster interactions between the church and school

· Foster interactions between the church and staff, students, and parents

· Foster a better understanding of education

· Provide a sharing of services and resources between partners

· Increase community support for Peoria Public Schools

Needs:

The greatest need is for adult-child interactions.

Volunteers:

Church Volunteers are asked to spend one hour a week working individually with one or more students as a reading tutor. The school and the Volunteer Coordinator, Dale Ryan, will determine scheduling.

We will need 10 volunteers for our ministry with the school.

Training:

Training will be done by District 150. A part of this preparation includes a background check to meet state requirements.

Benefits:

Benefits for the church include personal satisfaction from working with students and staff. The students develop relationships with caring role models.

Benefits for the school include improvement in the quality of educational programming, enhanced learning for students, and a partnership with a neighborhood organization.

Persons interested in the tutoring program with Hines School are invited to call the church office (682-5491) for more information.
